Case Study – Bishops Stortford Toilet Refurbishment Works

In November 2024, Capel CS Ltd were awarded the Male Staff toilet refurbishment at Bishops Stortford Station for Greater Anglia. The employer’s brief was for the existing sanitary ware to be replaced, toilet pans would be replaced with Anti-Ligature pans and concealed cisterns, the number of wash hand basins was increased from two to three, new cubicles Inc. an ambulant cubicle, IPS duct panels and vanity unit were to be provided, new urinals were installed whilst utilising the existing below ground drainage and supply pipework.
The walls received white Rock cladding, new vinyl sheet flooring with coved skirting, a new water heater was installed within the vanity unit, new LED lighting, hand dryers and radiator where all provided, the refurbishment looked to maintain the character of the building with the primary structural lines of the existing toilet facility being maintained.
The works were Carried out under a minor Agreement for Works of Simple Content (including Design), commencing on site early February 2025 with a completion date of 12th March 2025.
Early surveys were completed with an architectural walkover and surveying for the new IPS panels, cubicles and vanity unit, drawings were developed and issued to Greater Anglia for review and approval. Whilst the facility was out of use temporary toilet facilities were provided for the station’s male staff to utilise.
The power and water supplies to the facility were isolated to allow the area to be stripped out, this included the sanitary ware, cubicles, floor finishes, lighting, hand dryers and fixtures and fittings.
The walls, ceiling and floor were prepared ready to receive their new finishes, an area of defective timber flooring was removed and replaced, a section of defective plasterboard to the ceiling was removed and a new section replaced and made good, the walls were prepared to leave them smooth and flat. The ceiling was filled, rubbed down and re-decorated, new White Rock wall panels were installed full height to the walls, vinyl sheet flooring with coved skirting was installed to complete this element of the refurbishment.
The new duct panels, cubicles and vanity unit was installed, the sanitary ware installed, tested and commissioned, grabrails were provided to the Ambulant cubicle in compliance with Part M, with decoration to all Woodwork and to complete new Fixtures and Fittings were installed.
New M&E installations included new LED lighting and emergency lighting, extract ventilation, a new radiator, new water heater and hand dryers being provided.
