In January 2023, Capel CS Ltd were awarded a tranche of toilet refurbishments for Greater Anglia. The remit was for the primary structural lines of the existing toilet facilities to be maintained, together with the location of windows and fenestration. The employer’s brief was for the existing sanitary ware to be replaced like for like, whilst utilising the existing below ground drainage and supply pipework.
The refurbishment looked to maintain the character of the building and remaining features with sympathetic alterations to ensure that the space remains in active use.
The works were Carried out under a minor Agreement for Works of Simple Content (including Design), with a completion date of 31st March 2023. The station remained operational throughout the contract period. To ensure the day-to-day operation of the station was not impacted and Greater Anglia complied with their obligations to its passengers and staff, the works were phased to ensure the station had toilet facilities available for Male, Female and disabled passengers at any one time.
The works at Colchester Station included the refurbishment to the Male, Female and accessible toilet on platform 2, the Gents, Ladies, staff Gents and Staff Ladies on platform 4.
The Gents toilet located on platform 4 was subject to a minor layout change to maximise the space, the cubicles were re-configured to allow the vanity unit to move back into the room, and the removal of the store room created a larger cubical.
Each toilet facility benefited from having new IPS panels, duct panels and vanity units, new sanitary ware was provided to each area, new floor and wall tiling, suspended ceilings, decoration to Walls, Ceilings and Woodwork and to complete new Fixtures and Fittings were installed.
New M&E installations included supplies being installed within the fabric of the building were feasible, with new LED lighting and emergency lighting, extract ventilation, heating, water heaters and hand dryers being provided.
Further minor remedial works were finally carried out within the contract period, this included to rectify defective ply flooring and replace defective radiators. The works were completed within the contract period and within budget.
